Camp Andree Clark - 1928
In 1928 a fifteen year-old Girl Scout named Ruth Alden Clark attended Camp Andree Clark near Ossining, New York with her friend, Jeanne Claire Bowman. Eighty years later, her daughter, Susan McLean, transcribed the diary that Ruth kept during her days at camp.
The diary is reproduced here with the kind permission of Susan McLean.
Camp Andree Clark is still in operation today. Its 135 acres of
woodland are near the Edith Macy Conference Center at Briarcliff Manor, New
York.In 1920 the property was donated to the Girl Scouts in memory of Andree
Clark, by her parents, Senator William and Mrs. Clark. The camp opened in
1921 as the first national Girl Scout Camp. In 1937 it was the site of the
Silver Jubilee of Girl Scouting with Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from around the
world attending. Since 1979 it has been used as a national Girl Scout
site.
